Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Mikhail Tchoupakov graduated from the famous Bolshoi Ballet Academy. He danced with the Bolshoi Ballet for 9 years, during which time he performend as soloist parts in the full reqertory of the theater. Mr. Tchoupakov also received M.EA from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography under the tutelage of Professor Peter Pestov.
Mr. Tchoupakov taught for the Huston Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, David Taylor Dance Theatre, State Street Ballet, Ballet Arlington, and reputable schools in China, Romania, The Netherlands, Japan, and Brazil. He also taught for the Royal Ballet School and English National Ballet School in London and the Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham, UK. For three years, he was on the faculty of the University of Utah Department of Ballet as Assistant Professor Lecturer.
Mr. Tchoupakov serves as a judge and master teacher for many international ballet competitions, namely Youth American Grand Prix in the US, Japan and France, appearing int he 2011 film, First Position.
Mr. Tchoupakov's students are now performing with such companies as Royal Ballet, ABT San Fransisco Ballet, English National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Houston Ballet, The Polish National Ballet, Northwest Ballet, Norwegian Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Berlin State Opera Ballet, etc.
Chehon Wespi-Tchopp, season 9 winner of So You Think You Can Dance, was a student of Mr. Tchoupakov for 3 years in Birmingham, UK.
Mr. Tchoupakov currently teaches at the University of North Carolina School of Dance.
